What is LumbarYoga?
The Lumbar Yoga class will be a combination of explanations and a "modified" yoga practice.
This is not a "physiotherapy for herniated disc" class.
And it is not a classic yoga class for back pain: that is usually not good for who has an herniated disc, because to stretch the lumbar area, we can push the herniation further.
It is a slow beginners Vinyasa (flow) yoga class to experience the benefits of yoga, but adjusted for people with an herniated disc problem.
This means that will avoid or modify all the poses that can push the hernia further out (even when they don't give us immediate pain!).
The goal is not to make the poses, the point is using the poses to get more body awareness, to learn how to move better avoiding movements that flair up our pain and to get stronger.
Here some goals and benefits of this practice:
- Strengthening your core without painful movements
- Stabilizing and Elongating your spine
- Strengthening what we need to strength and to stretch what need to be stretched
- Getting more mobility in hips and shoulders and get stronger core to move the spine less!
- Getting more body awareness to better control more our movements so that we can avoid movements that trigger our pain.
...And all this while we educate our breathing to:
- Lowering inflammation
- Relax the nervous system
What is LY "Strength & Smile" ?
This time we will focus on Strength.
Too often, the muscles that should be strong are weak and we compensate using other muscles that – for this reason – are overworking and ending up being always contracted and giving us pain.
(e.g. our core is weak and so our shoulders try to compensate and become tense)
Strength and relaxation are both necessary for our body to be in balance, for 2 reasons:
- Each muscle should be able to perform and contract when we need and to relax when we are not using it.
- To relax some muscles, we need to engage others to support us or in general "do the job" we need.
We will pay attention on what we need to strengthen and what we can relax in each moment of the class, and always with the smile in our face!
